135th anniversary: establishment of Haileybury’s original campus, Wellington

1891: Original campus purchased

Haileybury’s original campus was located in a former mansion on the corner of South Road and New Street, Brighton Beach. The property was purchased in 1891 and the founding Head, Charles Rendall, opened the School on 10 February 1892.  

There were four teachers, and an enrolment of 17 boys. A charismatic and superb teacher, Rendall ran the School along traditional English lines.

95th anniversary: Castlefield purchase

1931: Castlefield purchase

Wellington’s site was too small for an expanding School to flourish. Head Sydney Dickinson found the ten–acre Castlefield property one kilometre to the east, along South Road. Aided by a legacy from his wife, Dickinson bought Castlefield and opened this new campus in August 1932. 

70th anniversary: opening of Castlefield Memorial Hall

1956: Castlefield Memorial Hall

The Memorial Hall was dedicated to former Haileyburians who perished during the two World Wars. Opened in February 1956, it had a seating capacity of 800. Used for a variety of Assemblies and other functions, it quickly became the spiritual and practical heart of the School. 

60th anniversary: appointment of Life Governors

1966: Life Governors

The first Haileybury Life Governors were nominated in 1966. The recipients, who were prominent and long-serving members of the School Council, included F.W. Cox, A.E. Sangwell, Rev R. Foyster, E.H.C. Russell and Mary Myers. 

50th anniversary: opening of Newlands, Keysborough

1976: Newlands opening

Stage One of the Keysborough Junior School opened on 1 February 1976. Comprising four classrooms, it housed just four Primary classes. Within two years, additional classrooms and facilities opened, and Years 7 and 8 boys moved into the new campus. 

Celebrating 50 years of Haileybury Newlands

20th anniversary: Girls arrive at Senior School

2006: Girls arrive at Senior School

This was one of the most significant days in the School’s history. On 23 October 2006, some 350 girls arrived to prepare for the 2007 Senior program. The School was buzzing with excitement as girls and boys spilled across the Quadrangle and through Wings café at Haileybury Keysborough. The following day a magnificent assembly was held in a packed Aikman Hall. 

10th anniversary: Haileybury ELC City commences

2016: City opens

This was Melbourne’s first vertical high-rise School. Amongst other features, it included a rooftop gymnasium and a terrace. Child-oriented and designed to be a well-resourced children’s learning space, City Campus opened on 11 April 2016 with an enrolment of 17 ELC students.
