We were delighted to announce at the Founders Day Assembly in February that Professor Arnold Dix (OH 1981) was awarded the 2025 OHA Medal, the Association’s highest honour. The award recognises exceptional achievement and service to the community beyond expectation in one’s chosen field.
Arnold came to international attention in 2023 when he played a leading role in the rescue of 41 workers trapped following a tunnel collapse high in the Himalayas.
During the Silkyara Tunnel rescue, Arnold became the public face of the 17-day operation, confidently assuring the world from the outset that the men would be brought to safety. Under his expert technical leadership, the rescue strategy shifted to a slower, safer excavation method after machinery failed. This was a critical decision that helped prevent further collapse. His calm, optimistic approach inspired confidence and hope throughout the operation.
Notably, Arnold refused payment for his role in the rescue, demonstrating a deep commitment to service and a belief in what can be achieved when people work together towards a common goal.
An internationally recognised tunnelling expert, Arnold is the founder of Underground Works Chambers, which provides specialist advice on high-risk underground infrastructure and safety regulation.
Arnold’s career has been remarkably diverse, spanning roles as a geologist, lawyer and barrister, as well as stints as a flower farmer, truck driver and welder.
He now joins an illustrious group of Old Haileyburians who have received the OHA’s most prestigious award.
Congratulations Arnold.
