An interview with Tanner Stanton

With a commitment to nurturing well-rounded young people, and inspired by his own experiences as a Haileybury student, Tanner Stanton creates environments where students can thrive and grow into the best version of themselves. His diverse roles include Middle School Boys Health and Physical Education Teacher, Deputy Head of Boys Middle School Year 8 Newlands (Keysborough), Coordinator of Sport Newlands (Keysborough) Boys and Girls, and Deputy Head of Cricket.

What inspired you to be a teacher?

I was inspired to become a teacher through my own experience as a student at Haileybury. I was fortunate to be guided by some incredible staff, many of whom are still teaching here today, who had a lasting impact on me and sparked my passion for education. Their support and example showed me the difference a great teacher can make. I am also driven by the opportunity to be a positive role model and to have a meaningful influence on students’ lives, both inside and outside the classroom.

What do you hope students will take from your classes?

I want students to feel valued and supported, knowing they are encouraged to grow into not just great students, but great people. I want students to leave my classes striving to be the best version of themselves, showing integrity, respect and a willingness to positively impact those around them. I want students to develop resilience and a growth mindset, understanding that effort and persistence matter not just in school, but in becoming well-rounded, capable individuals. I also want students to take away a genuine enjoyment of being active, along with habits that support their physical and mental wellbeing.

What has been an impactful moment from your teaching career?

Being a positive influence in students’ lives is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching. Through everyday interactions, showing care, consistency and belief, you help build their confidence and sense of self.

Knowing you have played a small role in shaping them into both a great student and a good person is humbling.

Being trusted with responsibility has also been very meaningful. Taking on leadership roles, coordinating programs and being relied upon by others has helped me to grow professionally and I am grateful for this.

What is a lesson you have learnt from your students?

Students respond best when they feel known, respected and valued.

Small moments are also important. A quick check in, a word of encouragement, or noticing an effort can have a lasting effect on a student’s day or mindset.

What is the most valuable teaching advice you have been given?

Build connections. Students are more likely to engage, take risks and respond positively when they know you care.
